America World Adoption (AWAA)
We requested and researched information from a dozen or so adoption agencies over the past 18 months. We looked at everything from their programs, fees, history, and personnel. Some of our friends worked with AWAA to adopt their son from Ethiopia. They had an excellent experience and we knew we’d love/need the expertise and support of good friends as we went through our adoption process. Our experience thus far has been great. We have an America World family coordinator that is walking through the process with us and is such a great help.
How much does it cost?
The total cost for adoption includes the application and paperchasing process (our homestudy and dossier), training, program fees, airfare and travel cost, and post-adoption follow-up. The estimate we’ve been given is $22,060-$31,810. The cost can vary quite a bit depending on airfare and travel costs.
Our plan for covering these costs is to save, save, save and apply for grants. We are also doing a fundraiser with the “Known” pendants we made.
America World is experienced in adoptions from Ethiopia. And the process is relatively inexpensive (comparatively) and straight-forward. Ethiopia is about twice the size of Texas, but has an estimated 4.3 million orphans. The children are primarily orphaned due to poverty.
How long will the adoption process take?
The ‘paper chase’ part of adoption is estimated to take 4-6 months. After this, we wait for our referral. This is estimated to take 8-11 months. For our referral we will receive a photo of our baby girl, any known medical records, and a short profile. Once we receive our referral we will wait for a court date and travel dates.
